Family Camp is a summer camp in late July/early August for the whole
family. That's right, the whole family. Set in the Pocono Mountains
of Pennsylvania, Shehaqua Family Camp is a great place to fellowship
with other families. Get a quick overview with About Family Camp
or read the latest news below. Shehaqua Family Camp was started
in 1995 by a small group of Unificationist families to provide a
vision of community of faith for our children. Since then it has
grown from a small gathering of families camping over a weekend
in tents to a three-week program for hundreds of people in rustic
cabins in the Pocono Mountains. We now already have the third generation
of campers attending, and some of the kids whose families attended
the early camps are now part of the camp staff. Family Camp is an
ideal place to get to know other families. Lifelong friendships
have started at Shehaqua Family Camp, and several campers even have
met their future spouse there.
Camp offers families a spiritually enriching experience through
presentations, nature, sports, crafts, music, and social activities.
The content presented during the various lectures is age-appropriate
Bible stories for the younger children, and basic Divine Principle—the
teachings of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon—for the older kids. (For more
information about the philosophy behind Shehaqua Family Camp, please
read “Our Mission”—see menu bar on the left.) Shehaqua Family Camp
welcomes people of all faiths.
SPEERS ELJABAR YMCA -- Dingman's Ferry, PA. Co-ed, traditional,
non-denominational. Camp Speers-Eljabar was founded in 1948
by north-central New Jersey YMCAs to provide the first inter-racial
overnight camp in the YMCA system.
The original site consisted of 310 acres and was purchased in 1948.
The purpose was to provide an adventure in intercultural Christian
living offering a short term experience for all boys of the middle
and lower economic group. In 1951, it was formally named Camp James
M. Speers after a conscientious philanthropist and distinguished
member of the New York City business community as well as community
leader in Montclair, New Jersey.
Camp Eljabar, originally Camp Nichecronk consisting of 700 acres,
was purchased in 1964 and provided opportunities for girls. In 1967,
due to the generous support of the Eljabar Foundation, the camp
was named Camp Eljabar for Girls. The name Eljabar is derived from
the first syllable of the first names of the daughters of Charles
and Florence Wallace, Elizabeth, Jane, Barbara, founders of the
Eljabar Foundation. The mission of Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA is to
serve a diverse community and to build spirit, mind, and body through
a unique combination of Summer Camp, Outdoor Education, Conference
and Local Community Programs. Our goal is that each camper and program
participant leaves our camp a better person than when they arrived,
and campers are set on the path to do the right things and contribute
to a better world as they continue to grow.
